Spark English UK was founded by Joy Portelli (Kru Joy), a Thai-British teacher. Initially, it was a learning centre in Pattaya, Thailand, providing English classes in the community in which she grew up. During the Covid-19 pandemic, it was no longer possible to continue helping these children.

In mid-2021, she started teaching English classes online for Thai EFL learners and English-speaking children. Due to the growth in demand for affordable classes, Spark English became an online homeschool for children studying in Thai national and international curricula. Her passion is in providing quality education opportunities for children from low-middle income backgrounds. Many children received discounted or free classes to help during this difficult time.
